About Canadian Artist Julia Trops

I have been working as a professional artist since 2003 after a diverse career in the Canadian Air Force. The bulk of my artwork in the online art gallery is my day to day “ponderings” in charcoal drawing, oil painting, acrylic painting and encaustic painting. I use oil and acrylic painting and charcoal drawing as mediums of artistic expression, almost like a diary. The focus of the subject matter is primarily nudes, both female nudes and male nudes - most recently predominantly in charcoal drawings and ink paintings. All my art work is original, and there will never be any reproductions! Buy direct from an emerging Canadian artist!

Artist Biography

As a child I loved exploring with line and colour by drawing on my walls and dolls. I learned very quickly that with a little control, I could manifest ideas into recognizable form.  My mother loved the classical masters, and I credit a great deal of my desire for passionate expression back to my exposure (and love) of the classical masters such as Mozart and Beethoven.

I was encouraged from a very young age to “see” and be “aware” in more ways than the visual, and immediately after high school I took courses in the University of Calgary Fine Arts' program. I continued studies at a post secondary level throughout my 12 year career in the Canadian Air Force, in both correspondence and night school. One of my ultimate goals was finally reached when I attended a full time degree program at University of Lethbridge, receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts with Great Distinction in 2001.

In 2002, in competition with 78 other candidates, I was chosen to be one of 6 resident artists in the new Rotary Centre for the Arts.

Among the historical art influences on my work are the Greek classical, da Vinci, Rembrandt, Ingres, Delacroix, Manet, Van Gogh, Cezanne, Matisse, Picasso, and most recently, Klee and Kandinsky. Influences from art theory include John Berger, Josef Albers, from theosophy include Leadbetter and Blavatsky, Fritjof Capra and currently Joseph Campbell.

My ideas incorporate my philosophy and understanding of life and space. These interests, which are currently manifesting in my expression, consist of a combination of concepts from time, space, and music. How I approach my art making is a result of my experiences in my previous career, and my desire for simple, direct and passionate expression.

Artist Statement

With a deep respect for the formal structure within life and within art, a work will generally start with a composition of line. Always a door is open to synchronicity and chance, and marks are made with honest expression. Regardless of working in either oil or charcoal, seldom will I go back to edit or adjust. The objective is to work quickly and efficiently in the space allotted, flow without thought; to abolish the idea of time in relationship to the creating. Darkness and light become forces which exist in balance on the page.
