Some of the most common questions I've had had to do with creation, spraying and size, so here are the answers I know you've been waiting for! Any other questions, please do contact me!
Q: Have you always drawn in an abstract
manner?
No, not at all. When I first started drawing, many years ago,
I drew in a classical Greek manner. My love was for all things
Greek, especially the statues, and all things Renaissance,
especially Michelangelo and daVinci. So my learning to draw was
based in these masters. There came a point though when I wanted to
express something "more"; more than can be expressed with simple
rendition, simple reiteration of what I could see. I threw out my
eraser, and "closed my eyes" to any errors in terms of classical and
realistic rendering. I decided that all lines were valid, all lines
existed for a reason. I found beauty in the simplistic, minimalistic
mark making, whether a lyrical stroke of life, or a scribble of
energy, it became important for me to find meaning in the abstracted
and abstract.
Q: Do you spray your drawings?
A: In previous years I did spray my drawings, never ever with
hairspray. Hairspray will discolour, and some fixatives will also
discolour. More recently, however, I have found that the charcoal
becomes a bit "dead". I like it alive and kicking! So I do not spray
them anymore. This doesn't affect the lifetime at all, just let your
framer know, and he/she will take care in the framing.
Q: How large can you draw?
A: I have drawings that are as large as I can get paper. The largest
to date have been 50"x38" on a printmaking paper, I think it is BFK
Rives. Also I have done drawings on rice paper, about 7 feet tall by
3 feet. So really I am limited only by the surface.
